All about DNA Testing Works
There have already been numerous people who have tried out DNA testing to learn more about their roots. Because of this, testing kits are a lot more popular today than they were before. Just in 2018 actually, more people have taken consumer DNA tests than those who have used such in the previous years. Tons of people today are indulging in DNA testing that it’s speculated to grow to around 100 million users in the next couple of years.
The hype for DNA testing is there but the question that people are wondering is, how it truly works?
Well, there’s no straightforward answer here because different companies have their proprietary algorithms in handling DNA data. On the other hand, if you are interested to give DNA testing a try, then here are few of the things that you need to be mindful about. The basics first, DNA tests could help in revealing secrets or discover things that you weren’t new.
There are a number of things in which DNA test can tell a person similar to where a person roughly came from, how closely you’re related to other members who are in the database and if you have specific traits. As for the results you will get, it depends largely on what you have ordered but here’s for sure, you will know whether you’re half of something and the other.
There are two things that are used to check the DNA and these are the provider’s code and spit of a person. Spit is pretty simple and quite self-explanatory. What you have to do is to spit into a tube and send it to the provider and after receiving it, it’s their responsibility to extract DNA from the sample and have it digitized so by that, it can be stored in the database and make a profile.
And right after it is digitized, the DNA will look like a string of 4 nucleobases of DNA which includes C, G, T and A. This is where the provider’s algorithms will kick in to perform DNA testing and it is where things are more complex.
The algorithms are capable of pulling out the C’s, G’s, T’s, and A’s. By finding patterns, they can then derive the meaning. Every company uses pattern-spotting algorithm to which everything remains a secret. On the other hand, there are about 600,000 positions to which human DNA codes differ and these are otherwise known as single-nucleotide polymorphisms.
By the time when the DNA testing is done, it is forwarded to the DNA library where it is joined by other DNAs and from this point, it can tell you where your DNA came from.
